CITB National Apprenticeship Awards

On Thursday 7 November 2019, we attending the CTIB National Apprenticeship Awards with David Voss, Knight Group Construction Operative. David was named Inspirational Apprentice of the Year 2019.

David Voss, Knight Group Construction Operative, was named Inspirational Apprentice of the Year at the 2019 Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Apprenticeship Awards.

The CITB Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the achievements of apprentices and employers across the UK for their commitment and dedication to construction.

The winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony hosted by broadcaster and property entrepreneur, Sarah Beeny. The ceremony took place at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London (7 November).

From a young age, David was encouraged to be involved in gang culture where he was led astray; a different life to the one he now leads. After relocating, David wanted to start working, but with a lack of work experience and behind in his education, he wasn’t sure what he could do. Still determined, he got himself a number of short term jobs as a site labourer. At 20, he was offered an apprenticeship with the Knight Group and was able to apply himself to something he had a real passion for. The application and interview process was new to David but he showed the attributes that the interview board were after and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

David said: “I am so pleased and at the same time shocked to win this award. My apprenticeship was a great experience and I would fully recommend it as a route to a brilliant career because you get the balance of learning and practical experience. I’d like to thank my employer, Knight Group and the National Construction College as they supported me all the way in my apprenticeship”.

Alan Bridgman, CITB Apprenticeship Officer, said: “David has shown an outstanding commitment to his personal development, in firstly sourcing work, which in his early life was alien to him. Knowing education had always been a barrier, David provided a portfolio of work to submit in his application which earnt him a merit. He took a year one apprentice under his wing, helping him with his learning and development on site. He would explain to him what needed to be done and how. David became his mentor, and with the experience of his apprenticeship, supported him through his first year offering his guidance and advice. David is a polite, dedicated individual and extremely deserving of this award”.

On behalf of everyone at the Knight Group, a huge congratulations David!
